ARCHIVING

At the Black Family Archive, participants will be guided through a 30 minute session of scanning and digitizing their family archives by Madelyn Inez an anthropologist, archivist, and storyteller. Madelyn’s community centered archive, Ode2LA focuses on Los Angeles natives belonging to & response to gentrification. Ode2LA strives to empower the heart of the city and affirm the voices revealing our stories. Oral histories and archiving of modern life is pertinent for the preservation of Los Angeles history, which sparked the conception of Ode2LA. In Collaboration with Endiya Griffin, Archives from Ode2LA will be transformed into coloring pages for the BIC community participants— inspiring the same for our Black family archives.

This iteration of the Black Family Archive will feature a coloring page activation facilitated by anthropologist, artist and memory worker— Endiya Griffin. Integral to Endiya’s praxis as an archivist, is inspiring new visions through the intergenerational stewardship of wisdom. Her coloring page series “Coloring Our Story” does this by inviting families to share photographic heirlooms which Endiya then transforms into coloring pages that encourage us to re-imagine the past as we take hold of our future.

COLORING

In collaboration with both Endiya and Madelyn Inez— a fellow anthropologist archivist, documentarian & founder of Ode To LA, we present a series of pre-made coloring pages that depict LA both past and present. During the event, participants will also be invited to select one image to be transformed into a customized coloring page and sent to them digitally.

CONSERVATION

Additionally, speak with conservator of photographs, Ronel Namde, about strategies for preserving your photographic prints for future generations. You’ll get some tips and advice on caring for your photographs and information about where to find resources.
