FAQs

What is Black Image Center?

Black Image Center is a Los Angeles-based community photography space founded by six young, Black photographers and producers. Our organization was born out of the racial reckoning that rocked our nation in 2020. During that summer, we witnessed non-Black photographers capturing images of Black pain and rage. In those moments, we found ourselves asking questions about what the world would be like if Black people were equipped to tell our own stories and include all of the nuance that we know is often excluded when our stories are through the lens of others. So we founded the Black Image Center! Our goal is to equip Black people with the skills to share our own diverse narratives. By holding space for people to cultivate photography and storytelling skills, we remind our community that we know exactly who we are.

Is Black Image Center an art gallery?

No, it is not! BIC is a community photography space, designed to uplift and empower Black people to tell their own stories. We host photography workshops, lectures, and educational events with the intention to build up LA’s Black creative community, and we also operate a sliding-scale photo studio.
