Join us this Saturday for vol. 004 of the Black Cinematheque spotlighting the groundbreaking work of Ousmane Sembene with screenings of 'Black Girl' and 'Mandabi'. These canonical works explore themes of identity, race, and African post-colonialism.
Mandabi (1968)
"Mandabi” is a biting satire about the complexities of bureaucracy and post-colonial corruption, as an illiterate Senegalese man grapples with a whirlwind of red tape and familial pressures upon receiving a money order from his nephew in Paris.”
Black Girl (1966)
"Black Girl” follows Diouana, a young Senegalese woman whose dreams of a better life in France unravel into a harrowing journey of exploitation and identity crisis, revealing the stark realities of post-colonial displacement and cultural alienation.”
